News and Events

Summer was so busy that you tended to think you might miss it entirely if you blinked.  For the girls, the busy-ness was divided pretty evenly between serious, productive activities (summer school, jobs, and so on) and fun stuff (swimming, movies, the mall, arts classes, etc.)   A giant garage sale produced $800 to help finance the girls’ summer-ending trip to Corpus Christi and environs—very exciting, especially for those who’d never visited the coast before.

The trip was made more affordable (and more fun) by the generosity of many of our friends—for example, Gandy Ink’s donation of the special

T-shirts shown in these pictures.

After the vacation, it was time for the girls to shop for new school clothes, register for classes, and (“at last!” the houseparents sighed) go back to school.

The young men and women in the Transitional Living Services program were equally busy— looking for jobs, finding apartments, enrolling in classes, and generally coping with the problems of life on their own.  Estella Pina, our TLS caseworker, is kept busy helping them find ways to cope, and is continually searching out new resources for them—from job leads and scholarship applications to donations of toiletries and food, to sympathy and reassurance when seemingly insurmountable crises arise.

The coming of fall also marked the beginning of the annual United Way campaign.  As a member agency, our staff members take an active part, speaking to employee groups, participating in agency fairs, and generally reminding our friends in the community how vital United Way support is.

Important events scheduled for the future include the Princess Parade Tea Party and the 2010 Bluegrass Festival, both described elsewhere on this site.  The volunteers who organize and produce these events have been hard at work for months, and all of us at CVHG/CES are deeply grateful for their efforts.
