Transitional Living Services
Concho Valley Home for Girls is the provider for this program designed to serve former foster children up to age 21 under a contract with TDFPS. This year, we will expand these services as we begin operation of a Transition Center that will serve as a “one-stop-shop” for youth to access a wide spectrum of community resources. Transitioning youth can rely on for this network for emotional and practical support. Our agency’s TLS case manager is the primary contact to help youth identify needs and find help. Mentors and job coaches are an integral part of the program, a resource bank for participants has been developed, and an advisory board including agency representatives and community members helps shape the program to best serve participants.
The importance of these services is underlined by the findings of the Texas Foster Care Transition Project, a research effort conducted by the Center for Public Policy Priorities. This study revealed that former foster children who have transitioned from foster care to independence “are at extreme risk of poverty and homelessness, victimization and criminal involvement, illness, early childbearing, and low educational attainment."

Workforce Investment Act Youth Program CVHG contracts with the Texas Workforce Center for a program to serve 14- to 21-year-olds referred by community agencies to set them on the path to becoming productive members of the workforce. Participants attend PAL classes and can earn minimum wage for up to 20 hours a week for attending GED preparation classes or for a job placement. They may also receive support services that will enable them to be employed, such as child care or work clothes. |
